Appraisal and Managing Performance

Introduction

This course has been designed to teach managers how to deal with appraisals and how to manage performance within a care environment.

Aims

This workshop aims to place appraisal within an appropriate context - as one aspect of the process of managing staff performance - with a view to moving away from appraisal as a once-a-year pass or fail assessment. The workshop will provide an overview of the principles, theories and concepts relating to the most common forms of appraisal and presents some models for carrying out an appraisal. The second day provides an opportunity to focus on skills for the appraisor and/or appraisee and to look at some of the difficulties associated with carrying out an appraisal.

Objectives

Having successfully completed the workshops participants will have:

  • Identified the reasons for and the possible benefits of having a performance management system
  • Looked at the place of appraisal within performance management and clarified its relationship to other parts of the performance management process
  • Identified the elements of an effective appraisal
  • Clarified their roles and responsibilities in the process of appraisal
  • Tested out some sample appraisal systems and identified the positive and negative aspects of each
  • Identified and practiced some core skills for carrying out appraisal
  • Examined difficulties and obstacles and identified ways of overcoming these
  • Identified their own action plan for following-up the course
