Chapter 8 Signing, Lighting and Guarding with particular reference to Railway Crossings

Course Aims

To acquaint those engaged with Roadworks or Temporary Restrictions which cause partial or total obstruction of the Highways whether on the carriageway, footway, cycleway, verge or hard shoulder with sufficient knowledge or signing, lighting and guarding methods in order to minimize delays and eliminate risk of accidents whilst maintaining a safe environment for the general public, road user and those engaged with the works. This course has been designed with specific reference to those involved with the railway.

  • Chapter 8 Signing
    • Basic principles
    • Site safety
    • Signing for pedestrians and vehicles
    • Works on footways
    • Works on single carriageway road
    • Work at rail crossings
    • Work at road junctions
  • Traffic control at railway crossings in accordance with the Highways Act 1984 and Chapter 8 Appendix 4
    • Traffic Control
    • Give and Take system
    • Priority signs
    • Stop/Go boards>
    • Traffic control at railway crossings in accordance with the Highways Act 1984 and Chapter 8 Appendix 4
  • Portable Traffic Signals
    • Safely setting up a two-phase system and traffic density
    • Vehicle actuation
    • Fixed time
    • Manual operation
    • Use of traffic controls at railway crossings

Course Duration

Three days, if City & Guilds 6156 Unit 2 is a requirement, two days otherwise

Certification

Certificate of Attendance, and if required, for Candidates who are successful in achieving levels of competence required Unit 2 of the City and Guilds 6156 scheme (Street Works Excavation and Reinstatement).

Venue

Any suitable site with access to railway crossings.
