Ventilation HTM 03-01 Overview

Ventilation HTM 03-01 for Maintenance Staff - Competent Person

HTM 03-01, Specialised Ventilation in Healthcare Premises was published in November 2007 as the replacement for HTM 2025 for new installations and major refurbishments.

HTM03 supersedes all previous versions of HTM 2025 and has rationalised its content into two parts, Design and Operational Management.

Aim of the course

This course is intended to improve trainees skills and knowledge relating to ventilation plant, including: identification of faulty plant; carrying out airflow, pressure, temperature and humidity measurements; carrying out maintenance activities; interpreting HTM 03‑01 and carrying out audits and verifications/validations to HTM 03‑01.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course the delegate will be able to:

  • State the purpose of ventilation systems
  • State the meaning of ventilation terminology
  • Identify ventilation system components
  • Identify correctly installed components
  • State the function and probable location of fire and smoke dampers
  • State the function of controls and valves in a ventilation system
  • Measure airflow at terminals
  • Measure zone pressure differences
  • Locate relevant information in HTM 03‑01
  • Carry out plant audits
  • Carry out operating theatre suite audits
  • Carry out operating theatre validations
  • Identify remedial works
  • Achieved the level of knowledge required for consideration as a CP

Delegate Numbers

Engineering Staff - Due to the practical elements of this event, the maximum number of delegates is 8.

On-site Requirements

  • A training room with whiteboard or flip chart will be required for the duration of the event. Projector and screen will be provided by the trainer.
  • Access to ventilation plant rooms will be required and at least one AHU containing a chiller coil will need to be shut down for the practicals.
  • Access to an operating theatre greatly enhances the learning in this course. Where access is possible, the day and time this takes place can be varied to fit in with theatre availability.
  • Precise requirements for practicals will vary from site to site and will be discussed with the client prior to the event taking place.
  • Delegates should have access to site copies of HTM 03‑01

Site Equipment

Airflow test and measuring equipment will be provided for the duration of the event but where sites have their own equipment, it should be made available so that trainees can also practice with it.

The trainer can advise on the purchase of suitable test instruments if required.
