Asbestos Practical Safety Awareness
Introduction
The Asbestos Regulations require mandatory training for anyone liable to be
exposed to asbestos fibres at work This includes maintenance workers and others
who may come into contact with or who may disturb asbestos (eg cable installers-
contractors) as well as those involved in asbestos removal work. Objectives
By the end of the course operatives will have gained knowledge on:
- Dangers of Exposure
- Limit of Work with Asbestos
- Safe Working Procedures, Practices and Methods.
- Safety Controls, Precautions and Requirements for Safe Handling.
- Waste Disposal Requirements for Asbestos and Contaminated Materials
The Course Covers
- What is Asbestos - nature forms and names
- Legal Framework for working with Asbestos containing Materials
(Regulations and ACOP's).
- Health Hazards and Affects
- Exposure Limits and Action Levels
- Identification - Sampling, Testing and Labelling
- Risk Assessment - for exposure and MHSW Regs
- Training Requirements
- Prevention or Reduction of Exposure
- Use of Procedures, Instructions and Control Measures.
- Provision and Cleaning of Protective Clothing
- Housekeeping and Cleanliness
- Designated Areas
- Health Surveillance
- Washing and Changing
- Practical demonstration and practice by participants in workplace
techniques, covering aspects such as gland packing, jointing, ceiling tiles,
other items such as brakes and clutches.
All participants will be expected to participate in this section and must
have suitable protective clothing for this activity e.g. coveralls, safety
glasses or goggles, disposable face masks and impervious gloves.
THERE WILL BE NO ASBESTOS USED IN THE DEMONSTRATION.
As this is for demonstration purposes the protective equipment need not be to
the standard required for Asbestos working.
A suitable room/workshop of reasonable size must be available for the
practical session.
