Introduction to Personal Protective Equipment - PPE - interactive CDROM

Introduction

Removing risk from the workplace is a primary aim of the Health & Safety Act. Eliminating risk should be your employer’s first priority after having carried out a hazard analysis. If there is no way of either removing or reducing risks to the individual, personal protective equipment should be provided.

The PPE at work regulations clearly state that providing personal protective equipment should only be a “last resort”. The reasons are not too hard to find, since only the person wearing the kit is protected and even then not completely.  You, as the user have obligations too; to use and wear the equipment correctly, and to report any defects. You must also return it to the proper storage place after use. There is a whole range of safety equipment available from industrial helmets to body, eye and foot protection.

The requirements for each job need to be assessed, the correct equipment chosen and fitted, to keep you safe at work.
