RESPONSIBILITIES
The person who owns or controls the business or premises is responsible for
the safety of the Employees and other RELEVANT PERSONS by properly managing
the following:
Fire Risk Assessment
Fire Safety Policy
Fire Procedures (such as evacuation)
Staff Training
Fire Drills
Means of Escape
Signs and Notices
Emergency Lighting
Fire Alarm
Fire Extinguishers
Fire Doors and Compartments
The Responsible Person must appoint one or more Competent Person(s) to
assist in the delivery of the above.
Failure to carry out these responsibilities may result in Enforcement by the
Enforcing Authority through the actions of an Inspector. Conviction for
failing to comply may lead to a penalty consisting of a fine or up to two
years’ imprisonment.
COMPETENT PERSON
COMPETENCE IS DEMONSTRATED
THROUGH SUFFICIENT TRAINING,
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE.
A Competent Person must be appointed to carry out Fire Fighting duties
(where appropriate), contact the Emergency Services,
and assist in evacuations. This person would typically be a “Fire Warden”.
This programme has been designed to train your Fire Wardens. It will help to
ensure that you operate within the law and protect your workforce and
business.
1. Background
This section covers the basics including how a fire spreads through a
building, the danger of smoke, the causes and costs of fire, how to reduce
the risks of fire, understanding signage and where signs should be placed.
2. Fire Prevention
This section explains the importance of a safe working environment, it
explains what a fire risk assessment is and what
it means to the Fire Warden, it looks at risks and the significance of
planning and conducting fire evacuation drills.
3. Fire Evacuation
This section looks at human behaviour and how people react in a fire related
situation – it demonstrates how critical the role of a Fire Warden is and
also the procedures the Fire Warden needs to
follow to conduct a safe evacuation.
4. Fire First Aid
This section looks at and explains the different classes of fire, the
different types of fire extinguisher and how to operate them – and which
extinguishers to use on each class of fire.
5. Legislation
This presenter-led section explains the legislation in a straightforward
way. It is simple to understand and concentrates
on the relevant part of the legislation.
6. Test
After completing the programme the trainee Fire Warden sits a
multiple-choice test, which is evidenced by a printable certificate.
The stand-alone CDROM is ideal for the smaller company.

necessary.
